Weeds of National Significance

In June 1999, a list of 20 Weeds of National Significance (WONS) was announced - 17 of these weeds are found in Queensland.

These weeds were determined by their invasiveness, impacts to the environment, potential for spread and, and social and economic effects. They pose a serious threat to human health and safety, pastoral and cropping industries, water quality and supplies, forestry management, infrastructure damage, cultural values and tourism, and the community in general.

For more information on WONS in Queensland, visit the Department of Natural Resources and Water website.

Information on the national management arrangements of WONS is available from the  Weeds Australia website.
