Great Barrier Reef Water Quality Protection Plan
The Australian and Queensland governments developed the Reef Water Quality Protection Plan to address declining water quality in the Reef lagoon.
The Reef Plan's goal is to halt and reverse the decline in water quality entering the Reef within 10 years. The Reef Plan contains strategies and actions to address water quality pollution from broad-scale land use and builds on existing Australian, state, regional and local government programs.
The Reef Plan has two objectives:
- to reduce the load of pollutants from diffuse sources (i.e. agriculture) in water entering the Reef.
- to rehabilitate and conserve areas that have a role in removing water borne pollutants.
