Nutrient management zones

Nutrient management zones are geographical areas identified as high risk in terms of nutrient inputs and potential loss to waterways.

By identifying nutrient management zones, effort and assistance to improve nutrient management on farms can be focused to improve the quality of water entering waterways and the Reef lagoon.

Nutrient management zones and water quality improvement plans share similar objectives in terms of implementing nutrient management practices which improve water quality and ultimately sustain Reef health. For the purpose of WQIPs, nutrient management zones are critical source areas for nutrients that need to be adressed as a priority in plan implementation.

Water quality improvement plan managers and the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries are working together to ensure the target setting processes for both initiatives align in high priority areas and the most efficient and effective outcomes result.
