Water quality monitoring in Reef catchments (June 2008)
This report documents water quality monitoring programs occurring in Queensland's Great Barrier Reef catchments during 2002-08.
The objectives of the report are to:
- improve understanding of current water quality monitoring activities supporting Reef Plan actions I4 (marine), I5 (catchment), and I6 (community-based); and monitoring and evaluation associated with regional water quality initiatives in Reef catchments
- assist in identifying needs and gaps (and any duplication of effort) in water quality monitoring activities in relation to:
- validating and refining catchment-scale models (for reviewing and refining regional management actions and targets)
- monitoring and evaluating regional water quality initiatives and reporting on progress towards water quality targets.
- assist in identifying areas where regional monitoring alliances between government agencies, regional NRM bodies and other key stakeholders should be progressed as a matter of priority.
This report does not attempt to document all water quality monitoring activities currently occurring across the Reef and its catchments. There is an extensive range of monitoring activities currently underway at a number of scales and for a wide range of objectives. This report focuses on the activities relevant to monitoring and evaluating Reef Plan and regional water quality initiatives (such as water quality improvement plans).
