Tara Landcare coordinator wins state Young Achiever Award

Tara Landcare coordinator, Melissa Brien, was awarded a Queensland Young Achiever Award in Brisbane last week for her contribution, planning and leadership in the local and regional community and economy of south-west Queensland.

Tanya Robinson, Inglewood Landcare coordinator, was a semi-finalist in the same Regional Initiative category.

Melissa and Tanya were nominated by the Queensland Murray-Darling Committee as a way of showing their appreciation for their great achievements with their Landcare groups and sub-catchment planning.

Melissa was nominated for her roles as secretary of Tara Apex, an auxiliary fire fighter and an SES member. Tanya is a member of the Fire and Rescue squad, volunteers with the Inglewood show committee and does fire training at schools.

Report breaks drought on climate degradation facts

You can get your free copy of the much-in-demand Pasture Degradation and Recovery in Australia's Rangelands: Learning from History by contacting Greg McKeon at NR&M Indooroopilly on 3896 9548.

At a time when much of Australia is still facing the prospect of continuing drought, a large team of scientists from across Australia has just published the report describing eight historical degradation episodes in Australia's rangelands.

It describes in detail the climatic and economic forces that led to the degradation episodes and subsequent partial recovery to understand the causes and what is needed to prevent future episodes.

The report shows that NR&M is developing the scientific basis for better natural resource management, and helping meet the challenge for both science and industry not to repeat the mistakes of the past.

To Bugle or not to Bugle: That is the question

Have you ever wondered what The Bugle is all about, whether you can contribute, and who reads it?

The Bugle is a weekly newsletter that gives a snapshot of what the government players are doing for natural resource management across Queensland. We also like to keep you informed of any conferences, training and extension activities on offer that have a significant NRM theme.

The Bugle is distributed to many stakeholders from government, industry and the community. The readership ranges from Australian government facilitators, NRM working groups, SIP coordinators, and regional bodies and groups, to peak bodies such as Agforce, Australian Marine Conservation Society, Commerce Australia, Canegrowers, and Greening Australia.

With such a diverse readership we strive each week to make our stories interesting, relevant, and newsy. Your feedback is always welcome and we'd love to hear your ideas on what could make it a better newsletter.

SPRA also publishes Voice of the Regions, a monthly e-newsletter that allows the regions to showcase what's happening in their part of the world.

If you have stories of success in your region please send them to Shona Strachan for inclusion in Voice of the Regions.
